Fairy Shoes

Yesterday I was at the dollar store buying some things for Kaeson's party when I came across a pair of elf/ fairy shoes. I bought them thinking that they would be cute for Kyra's dress up box. When I got them home, she was THRILLED! She immediately put on a princess costume and tiara and started prancing around the house.

After closer inspection of the shoes, I realized how easy they would be to make. I also so (arrogantly) thought that I could make them look much better and be of a much better quality. While I was out, I stopped by the store and bought another pair of shoes. Thank heavens I stopped today because most of them were gone by the time I got there.

I took them apart, fashioned a new pattern, figured out how to line it and make it look a bit snazzy and whipped a pair up. They are quite cute in my never to be humble opinion. I did them the first time out of scrap fabric since I didn't know how they would turn out. I am off to try it with fancy ones now!!!

Duck Duck Goose... Oh, I Mean Duck

After Kaeson's final birthday celebration, I was exhausted. I haven't been sleeping well the past couple of weeks and my whole body just fell into exhaustion after the last party guest left. So, I bribed Harvey into taking the kids to see the ducks. We live in a great part of town for duck watching (they ususally congregate in our backyard) but, he took them on an adventure to Murray Parkway to bird watch. The ducks were extremely tame and let the kids touch and pet them. Besides making me shiver a little with ewww, I thought it was kind of cool. They got a kick out of feeding the birds half a bag of wonder bread. I got a kick out of their pictures. Oh, and what did I do with my spare hour by myself. Seeing as it was too early to go to bed, I did what every person should do every once in a while, took a long hot bath with a drink and a fantastic book. I loved it!

Nearing the End of the Birthday Celebration

I have mentioned before that we tend to make birthdays last over days...weeks...sometimes months. Kaeson's birthday is actually on June 5, but, we held his birthday party today. I know that I frustrate people with my lack of fixing an exact date immediately but, with the severity of the weather during the past several weeks, I am rather glad that we waited.
Summer birthdays are awesome to have! They can be hosted outside! I have an August birthday and all of my birthday parties growing up, were held outside. The invitations were sent out inviting kiddos to a Water Games party. As the clouds rolled in and the hail and rain pelted my house this morning, I started dreading the afternoon. I had visions of 13 children under 6 running through my (relatively) clean house as the basement flooded during the birthday party. I know, aren't I a postive person! By mid morning, the storm broke and I regained my calm (haha) composure. I ran my errands, picked up birthday party items and party favors and of course, my Diet Coke (the large size is on sale is at McDonald's for $1 right now.) I picked up my sister and came home to make the cupcakes. We were ready with several hours to spare... or so I thought. We were leisurely going about our morning when we suddenly realized that our water balloons were just not holding up. So, I thought to myself (no it wasn't the voices in my head...it was the sound of logic) that I could run to the store and quickly pick up a batch of stronger water balloons. Easier said than done. I had to go to three different stores, including searching for a party store that has apparently closed in the recent weeks, to even find water balloons and they were all as flimsy as the ones that I had already bought. After getting back to my car, I tried out our new "Splash Out" ball (scroll down a few posts to find out about this awesome party crowd pleaser) and it wasn't working. I ran back into Target and had a problem exchanging it since I had left the receipt at home and had only bought it an hour earlier. However, I got it taken care of eventually. On the way home, I saw Kyra's lunch sitting on the back seat of my car. Another trip to the school to help my child not starve in the middle of school.
By the time I was finished, I returned home just in time for the party. The party by the way, went off without a hitch. The kids loved it. Even though half way through the party, the clouds rolled in and threatened us with another bout of rain, we stuck it out. We played Splash Out, Pass the Sponge, Popping the Water Balloon Relay, Pin the Tail on the Donkey and each child got to sit on a massive water balloon to get all wet. It was great. A bit of cake and a few presents were just a small break in the fun. As soon as the all clear was given, the kiddos started running through the sprinklers again, despite the black skies. They really didn't notice. Not even for one second! Thanks to all the moms that stayed to help. Thanks to all the moms that dropped off all of their kids. The more the merrier!!! Really, I mean it. Thanks to all the moms that are taking all of my now unnecessary baby and food items off my hands. You are a big help! Most of all Happy Birthday Kaeson....Again!

6:00 a.m.

It is 6:00 a.m. Do you know where your children are? The other day, Kyra woke up very early and decided to not get the rest of the family up. So, instead, she went downstairs for breakfast. Continuing with the sweet nature that is Kyra, she set the table for the entire family, poured the cereal and even added place cards. Isn't she sweet! Kaeson loved the idea of the place cards and quickly found a great way to display his own place card. Don't you just love my extremely kookie kiddos.

The Airshow

A few weeks ago, we headed up to the Hill Air Force Base for an Open House/ Air Show. Let me tell you, it was really cool. I gained a new appreciation for our Air Force. I have an amazing friend who is an Airman's wife and after talking with her about what her husband does, I am truly humbled by these men and what they do for our country. Thank you!

How Did I Miss the Zoo

This is a really delayed post. The reason being: I forgot to download the pictures and just remembered that I had them. I would be remiss if I didn't post Toad's real first trip to the zoo. We went all the way back in May (Gasp from readers) but, I am catching up.

We went on a Friday afternoon. We decided that just the little family was not enough so we took our friends the Taylors and our neighbors kiddos. Ironically, it was so much easier to take the neighbor's kiddos too. They were so well behaved. I will have to remember to take them with me wherever I go...the grocery store, church, the doctor. Yes, I may need to borrow them often. They kept my kids in line for me.

So, we trekked it up to the zoo. Me, my cute pregnant friend, 7 kiddos and two heavily loaded strollers. It was a fairly crowded day but, we all had fun. So, if anyone is in the mood to go, let me know! I bought the super enhanced Zoo Booster pass and can get us all in! I am anxious to go again.

S'mores

For the last several years, my parents have really gone out of their way to give us great Christmas gifts. Three years ago we got a really souped up BBQ grill. Two years ago we received an outdoor fireplace. Last year, my parents had Costco deliver our gift, another outdoor fire thing. This one however has lava rocks on top and and has the fire coming up through the middle of the rocks. Pretty cool. On Tuesday, we finally got it out of the box and set up. I had activity days with the girls and we decided to make s'mores. Everyone came over and we ended up doing them here at the house. What an awesome activity to do with Spring Fevered 8 -12 years old that have obviously had more than their fare share of sugar over the last week or so of school. We had to cap the girls off at three each. I am just glad that they liked it.On a whim, my parents stopped by my house that same night. They were on their way home from my cousin's wedding reception and decided to stop in to say hi (I LOVE it when they do that.) So anxious to show off the fact that I was using their gift, I dragged them outside against their will to have them sit at our picnic table and stare at the little fire. After a few minutes of pleading, I got them to sit and roast the marshmallows with the kiddos. Everyone actually ended up having a great time.
Let me share with you the secret to making GREAT S'mores. My dad taught me this not too long ago. You use the chocolate graham crackers and the big, monster chocolate bars that they sell at Christmastime for $1 at the grocery store. My friend Toni also showed me that the chocolate melts better if you shove the chocolate inside of the melted marshmallow. I don't know. Give it some thought!

Splash Out

A new toy on my list of favorite things. Yesterday, I volunteered at Kyra's school for her Field Day. My station was one where we played the "pass the sponge" game and the "Splash Out" ball toss.

This Splash Out is AWESOME!!! The kids have all seen this on commercials on TV but, I hadn't seen it before. The premise is kind of like the game hot potato. You put a filled water balloon into the ball and screw it together. You set the timer and pass the ball. When the timer goes off, a pin inside the ball pricks the balloon and it pops.

I bought one today for Kaeson's party. Gotta tell you. It was great. Everyone loved it. I am going to pull this out the next time we have friends over. Friends beware!!!

New Shoes

I made these shoes for a friend and I loved them. I thought that they turned out kinda cute so, I thought that I would share!

Fairy Festival

We have been looking forward to the fairy festival since we went last year. Kyra has been excited to wear her new dress and has been counting down the days until she could prance and flit around Engh Gardens.

Well, as I have been posting the skies have been pouring rain and hail for the past few weeks. We had been hoping that they would clear enough to let the Festival continue. Thursday and Friday were gorgeous, perfect days but, on Saturday as I sat down to finish Kyra's costume (a futile attempt- talk about wardrobe malfunction), I saw the clouds roll in and the downpours begin. I started warning Kyra that the festival might be cancelled.

She was certain the the rain would not influence the festival. The fairies would make sure of that. So, we got her dressed and loaded her into the car. As I drove down the street with my windshield wipers going full blast, I tried to talk her into just going to lunch with me and having her picture taken at Thanksgiving Point when the weather got nicer. She did not relent. She is one die hard fairy.

We made it to the festival and she was thrilled beyond thrilled to be there and enjoyed every single second. They cancelled some of her favorite activities because of the heavy rain, but she enjoyed every part that she could participate in. Her favorite parts: walking through the flower fairy maze (where she heard a fairy whisper to her,) and putting her wish on the wish tree (her wish was to grow up to be a real live fairy!)
There is talk of all of us fairy lovers getting together and hosting a fairy fest for our little ones. I am up for hosting if anyone is intersted in coming. Let me know!!!
I LOVE MY FAIRY!!!!!!!

Looking For Input!

I posted this on another blog but, I thought that I would ask this here on this one as well. I am trying to restructure my budget to one that is more realistic to the needs of my family. One of the things that I am looking at is groceries. I have been looking at people's weekly menus and it got me thinking as to how others do their meal planning. So, I am going to ask some questions and I would love everyone and anyone to respond to give me an idea on how YOU do it. There are a couple of questions that may be a tad personal so, feel free to skip them if you wish. However, it would be EXTREMELY helpful to me if you could answer them.

1. How do you plan your weekly menus? Do you do it willy nilly, whatever sounds good (I do this a lot)? Do you base it on the ads and plan meals according to what is on sale? Do you use your food storage? Do you plan your menus weekly, bi-weekly or monthly? Do you have any special tricks or tactics that you use?

2. How do you budget your groceries? Do you buy a week at a time? A month at a time? Do you budget cleaning supplies, diapers, prescriptions, etc into your grocery budget? Do you price match? What is your average budget for groceries? Do you budget weekly, bi-weekly, monthly (sorry this one is personal but, I want to see what others do)?

3. How do you budget in food storage?

4. A cousin of ours spends Sunday afternoons making several meals for the week and then freezes them or put them in the fridge. That way she is done for the week with her meals. Another friend (I try to do this too) cooks in the morning when energy is up and cravings are low. Do you do any of these things?

5. Do you price match? Do you comparison shop? Do you do the coupon clipping thing? How do you manage that?

Again, I am trying to figure out how most people do this. I would appreciate any info. Thanks friends!

Recipes

It is no secret that I am not exactly the Wolfgang Puck of the greater Salt Lake area, but I am not bad either. I really enjoy trying new things and experimenting with recipes. My favorite recipe website is allrecipes. It is fabulous.

My favorite wedding gift was from my mom's best friend, Denise. She has been just like an aunt to me my entire life. When I got married, I recieved the cutest idea ever. She gave me a picnic basket with cider and cheese, a picnic blanket and a recipe box. I thought that it was a cute idea when I opened the gift but, was thrilled when I actually opened the recipe box.
Inside the box was about 50 of Denise's favorite recipes, copied onto cute recipe cards and laminated. Now, this family is full of AMAZING chefs. Yes, I do mean full on chefs. So, I knew that any recipe that was in this box would be absolutely amazing. The gift at that time skyrocketed onto the top ten list of greatest gifts of all times.

Since then, anytime that I find a recipe that I love, I copy it down and it goes into the box. I have recieps from all sorts of friends and family. I have everything from shrimp scampi and lime margarita chicken fajitas to homemade ice cream and my grandmother's tamale pie. I absolutely love that I can go to that box, close my eyes, pull out any recipe and know that it will be great! If I find a recipe in a cookbook or online that I love, I copy it down and put it in the box. Even though I know that I could find it sometime later on.
Anyway, pointless but, I wanted to share.
